“You need a lot of money to start, build and run a successful business.”

That is the way it used to be. You needed to raise a butt-load of money from dear Aunt Maude, We-Hate-Entrepreneurs Bank Inc., Arrogant Investor Claude, or perhaps rob We-Hate-Entrepreneurs Bank Inc.

Because starting and running a business was expensive. And it still can be depending on your field. If you want to start a mall, it will cost a lot of money. Or really any brick & mortar business.

The “best businesses” were well-funded and had rode around on segways…spending other people’s money (remember Pets.com?) And that is great if that is what you want to do.

But, there is a new breed of entrepreneurs and I bet you might be one of them. This new breed is doing things by being smarter, faster, cheaper as opposed to dumber, slower and expensive. These entrepreneurs aren’t just building businesses online, they are building (and have built) profitable brands.

This isn’t a case of people choosing to do business online vs. offline. Because, really every business is both even if you don’t have a physical store. As many of us know, much of online networking and marketing happens offline.

Expensive start up dollars are replaced with hustle, effort and caring…and the use of a plethora of online tools (both free and cheap). Really…there is a tool for pretty much everything now. And more tools coming out by the day (hey, if you don’t see it make your own).

These entrepreneurs don’t just throw money at a problem. They throw creativity at it. They focus on one-on-one relationships. Quality content (videos, articles, blogs…emails, etc.). And of course something to sell be it services, physical products, books, virtual products, etc.

This doesn’t mean entrepreneurship now takes less work. In fact, it might take more work and more passion then ever before because in many ways the opportunity has been democratized. Because entrepreneurship NOW takes far more hustle, effort, caring and creativity…but in many cases far less money.

Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson grew by and creating a community…before they had a product. ( here).

Peter Shankman started simply with a Facebook group which has ballooned to a worldwide phenomenon and million dollar business. (right here).

…and I could list 100 more men and women.

What do these folks have in common?

1. They all have massively profitable businesses.

2. They are all happy and love what they do. They are passionate.

3. They hustle and connect with people one-on-one.

4. They create valuable online content.

5. They are all visible leaders and the face of the brand.

6. They have a specific niche they dominate.

7. They are super creative.

8. They are all growing and succeeding.

9. They have taken web tools and maximized the living crap out of them.

10. They ooze inspiration for all of our businesses.

…and none of these folks are super humans or mythical creatures. This type of success is replicable…in your own way.

The bottom line is the business world is changing. Opportunities are endless and there may not be a better time to start, build and grow a business…as long as you have the drive, passion, creativity and hustle to pull it off. I bet you can.
