About Today’s Guest, Scott Kurtz:

Scott KurtzScott Kurtz was introduced to me by former guest, Gary Arndt. Part of Gary’s email said this:

“Scott is an Eisner and Harvey award winning cartoonist. He has been drawing PvP for over a decade and has been the leading voice in the industry. He has a great podcast and co-wrote the book on webcomics. He has been a leader in helping creators profit from their work.

I think Scott would be a great guest for the show, and it would probably be one the best shows you’ve ever done.

I couldn’t agree more with Gary. This is one of the longest interviews I’ve ever done on the show because I was just enthralled by Scott. He has an amazing story, a rise to success that went against the traditional path, and is just an interesting guy to boot.

“Make as much money as you can, and don’t apologize for it. ” …Great comment.
I always enjoy the “where does the money come from ?” question that you ask (as I have posted on here before). ….but that has led to another question that I can’t quite calculate. What is the expected start-up costs to a legitimate web based home business?

    • David Siteman Garland

Ah thanks, Alan. Glad you like that question. From my experience, I don’t know if there is a GREAT answer to that. There are sooooo many factors. I know many people that are dominating with just a laptop and the Internet.

  • Grrreat interview..yet again, David. I luv how you invite creative entrepreneurs like these instead of “just” the usual suspects a la Seth Godin and Chris Brogan.

Both him and Matthew from “The Oatmeal” have build digital comic empires themselves, and they’re a HUGE inspirations to my comic brand that I’m building as we speak.

Turning into a true fan now thanx to your kick-ass commitment of conducting high quality and unique interviews.

    • David Siteman Garland

Thanks, Mars. Exactly what I’m going for. Sure, the big people are awesome, but I love stories like this of someone who is a rock star to a different community of people with a heck of a story.

  • Dude! Can’t wait to listen to this…Kurtz seems like the kind of guy that can teach you months worth of knowledge in a single conversation.

    • David Siteman Garland

He is a SUPER smart (and great guy).

GREAT interview! This is actually the first time I’ve listened to the interviews here, but super impressed and will be working my way through archives. Question, I may have just missed it, but do you put up transcripts of the interviews? Thanks!

    • David Siteman Garland

Thanks so much! At this point, scheduling is pretty tied up, so I focus on the video/audio; however, one day there might be transcripts 🙂

  • That. Was. Epic. Loved it, so fascinating – would love to know who his ad sales guys are and if they’re looking for new clients =)

  • Great interview. I like that he gave very thoughtful, honest answers. I also like that he is a mellow guy, further proof that you don’t have to be like the loud, obnoxious car salesmen on TV to promote your work.
